THE IMPLEMENTATION OF PORTFOLIOS IN ACADEMIC WRITING CLASSROOM

THE PRESENTED STUDY AIMS AT INVESTIGATING IF USING PORTFOLIOS AS A CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT TOOL COULD HELP STUDENTS DEVELOP THEIR AUTONOMY, WHICH WAS EXAMINED IN THEIR WILLINGNESS AND ABILITY TO WORK INDEPENDENTLY AFTER CLASS. TWENTY-THREE STUDENTS IN THEIR SECOND YEAR OF THE ACADEMIC WRITING COURSE AT THE FACULTY OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES IN HO CHI MINH CITY OPEN UNIVERSITY TOOK PART IN THIS STUDY. STUDENTS’ INDEPENDENT LEARNING ACTIVITIES INCLUDE CHOOSING THE TOPIC FOR WRITING THEIR ESSAYS, SEARCHING FOR RELEVANT RESOURCES, MAKING AN INFORMAL OUTLINE, MAKING A DETAILED OUTLINE WITH SOURCE INFORMATION, WRITING THE FIRST DRAFT, PEER AND SELF-EDITING, AND WRITING FINAL DRAFT. THIS WRITING COURSE LASTED IN 12 WEEKS, AND STUDENTS HAD TO SUBMIT THEIR FINAL PRODUCTS IN THE FINAL CLASS MEETING. STUDENTS’ LEARNING OUTCOMES WERE CONTINUOUSLY ASSESSED FROM CHOOSING THE TOPIC TO WRITING A COMPLETE ESSAY. THE QUESTIONNAIRE WITH THREE MAIN PARTS: INDEPENDENCE OF LEARNING, STUDY HABITS AND SKILLS NEEDED FOR SELF-STUDYING WAS USED TO COLLECT DATA AFTER STUDENTS FULFILLED THEIR WRITING COURSE. THE ANALYSIS OF THE COLLECTED DATA REVEALS THAT WITH THE PORTFOLIO ASSESSMENT, STUDENTS COULD DEVELOP THEIR RESPONSIBILITY, MOTIVATION, AND SELF-CONFIDENCE WHICH CONTRIBUTE TO THE WILLINGNESS TO WORK INDEPENDENTLY OF AUTONOMOUS LEARNERS THOUGH THERE ARE SOME DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE PAPER-BASED PORTFOLIO AND E-PORTFOLIO GROUPS. SOME LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY AND RECOMMENDED FURTHER STUDIES ON THE PORTFOLIO ASSESSMENT CAN BE FOUND AT THE END OF THIS CHAPTER. 2019 NOVA SCIENCE PUBLISHERS, INC.
